OOh DK deleted his post :-)
I am sorry but how does Privateer cause the root of such evil?
Not so much cause, but they are indicative of the problem I perceive. For instance a £6 high end magazine that has more in common with a Sunseeker owners club periodical.
As I said i'm not so much a working class hero I just see the sport of cycling has been taken over by middle aged, high income fuckwits who can afford better bikes than I can, Oh and 'STW' type people who excessively use acronyms to describe themselves DINKY, MAMIL, SITCOM etc ;-P
Or I could just be yearning for those rose tinted glasses when the Lycra was flouro and my bike had square tubes :-(

You see, I get moaned at if I describe my plight at length and moaned at if I abbreviate it.

IIRC, there was something in STW that they said "don't buy this" within one of the last few issues....aka Sean / Sandeep / Sylvian / Seamus....

Mine had a Pace 1" elastomer fork I remember it being decidedly shit even back then I think a mate had the Rock Shox Quattro? absolutely pissed on the Pace fork I even added a Girvin Flexstem to increase suspension to epic plush :-)
Of all the things Alcohol has cost me, that bike sold within the first year of University is one of the most lamentable :-(
Probably best left in the history files, now i'm riding one of them there new fangled plastic 29ers.

I always enjoyed reading ol' Worland, the wise owl that he was. I guess it was inevitable that he was going to speak against the machine sooner or later and it was also obvious that when that day came he'd be kicked in the face for it. The mags will be poorer as a result...

A cyclocross bike is all you need - took me ages to find that out.

I tend to agree, though I personally prefer the fatbar set-up, so I guess mine's a hybrid.
The last group ride with the 'orrible shower from these parts were bloody gruelling, though. At one point late in the ride, I found myself wishing for a tiny, weeny bit of suspension just to take the pain away from my palms.
But for general riding on your own (so you can ease-up on sections as I descibed above) they are, as you write, all you really need.
Assembling parts for a new version, at the mo...

I read one magazine a year...just to remind myself that they're not worth buying.
I do get quite some stuff done by the bikeshop/friends but I'm a self admitted mechanical numpty. I'm also a riding numpty, but have found as the years go, I spend less and less.
But I'm sure we all like new stuff from time to time...Shirker in Chief
