Thread: VAT Increase on Energy Products

It's about the balance of need/want and within that, choice. Many foods/foodstuffs are already standard rated but the core items are not - It's very complicated but can be seen HERE if you're interested (Section 4 is the area of concern here).
There was some stuff about this on the radio a while back and it seems to stem from firms like Red Bull & Monster who market their products as "sports" or "energy" drinks to avoid VAT. The reality is, however, as BHB stated above - they are, by HMRC definition, luxury goods and should be standard rated.
Lot's of folk make their own drinks with fruit juice, water, sugar & salt & the only the only triathelete I know swears by Haribo raher than "all that expensive shit".
The stark reality of taxation is that the Gov't (whatever colour) has a country to run and a debt to service and their income is derived from us (well, the taxpayers anyway). They'll get it from you somehow.Pootleist

All I would say is when making your own drinks up don't forget the squash 'cause sweet 'n' salty water tastes foul without itThere is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate tyres

I know I'm odd, but I don't mind a straight Glucose/Salt combo...
Somebody once told me if it tastes too salty or sweet then you've got the combo wrong?
(For those that make their own you can get maltodextrin which Is a better source of energy than just Glucose or Fructose: http://www.bulkpowders.co.uk/maltode...eProductSearch)
