    Garmin Mapping Options

    Aside from the very expensive Garmin UK Topo maps is here wot else folk use with thir GPS?

    I've found talk of free maps from Openstreetmap that can be used but need it all explained in Luddite terms.

    Hey Nobby, I've done a bit of looking round for my own benefit and found that both Talkytoaster and Ravenfamily do OS type maps for use with GPS's. Both have received vey favourable reviews.

    The things you need to do;
    Consider the unit you are using
    What is the internal memory available (for example, the entire UK equates to around 450mb) or, do you have the option of using a microsd card.

    It took me about 2 evenings to get it sorted, but now I understand it (as of about 0900 this morning) I've facepalmed myself for my own technical incompetence as it really isn't that scary.

    1) Download the file you want (I went with Talkytoaster Full British Isles + Contours + Routable
    2) Extract the zipped file
    3) Name the GMAPPSUPP.IMG
    4) Copy this file into the GARMIN folder on either the device or memory card
    5) Power up the device and select the file from the map list you are present with when choosing the MAP option on the unit

    A few notes;
    Make sure you ADD the .IMG extension otherwise it won't work
    Quite a few people say that you need to be careful to disconnect the device correctly otherwise it won't work.

    I've got an Etrex 30 and have gone from hating it to loving it over the course of today, the quality of the mapping is excellent and the routing is just what I want.

    If you want any help let me know (y'know, from one luddite to another )

    Cheers Bedds,

    I've been recommended the Talkytoaster stuff elsewhere as he now has one that looks OS (ish).

    I'll download that & see if it works off a micro SD card.

    I downloaded Open mtb map onto a garmin dakota - it's ok I s'pose, but doesn't look like OS maps, and I can't always tell which are roads and which are trails

    Well that worked first time & looks pretty useful - you can have it with or without contours too. Not bad for a freebie.
