so if beer is 2 a pint giving up the fags would deliver 1095 pints of the lovely brew, so a 20 a day habbit works out to 3 pints a day. Seems like a fair exchange.

It may be 2 where you live.... but never mind, point well made. In fact a similar conversation is occurring on LBC 97.3FM right now - Cigarettes and associated risks, or, booze and liver disease?

My view is, we're all going to go somehow, so may as well enjoy lide while we have it.

    *pssst* cheers!

Its been a while since I've been to a proper pub, but a Weatherspoon's beer is about 3.20 a pint, a "wine bar" type lager (ie, peroni) about 5.

    Edit - in central London.

A family would seriously struggle to live on 45k a year around here Billy. Seriously....you'd be a pauper! No good saying move somewhere cheaper, as people have jobs, family etc that make them want to stay and try and cope with it.

I pop down the Pub on a Thursday night to meet the Blokes and before the last price rise it was 19.75 for five pints of bitter and 1 packet of crisps. If you wanted to have a Pub meal in a basic local, not gastro Pub, you'd struggle to find anything on the mains below 12.

We live in Devon...where we have the joyous accolade along with Cornwall of having the largest gap between Pay and Living Expenses.

A typical salary would be around 18 and a typical 2-3 Bed Terrace comes in around the 200-240,000 mark.

Edit Quote from The Echo...Regarding a Government Report.

"The report said the average home in the region costs 228,940, nearly 12 times the average South West wage of 19,713.It said house prices have increased three times faster than incomes during the past decade, and now cost 15 per cent more than in 2005 and 116 per cent more than in 2000.
In Devon, the average home costs 241,575, which is 13.5 times the average income of 17,940, with even homes at the lowest quartile level costing 155,000.
The gross annual income needed to secure a mortgage in Devon is 51,766.
The Federation's 'league table' of least affordable local authority areas in Devon is topped by the South Hams, with homes averaging 323,360, which is 16.7 times the 19,328 average income.
West Devon is fourth, with average houses at 236,610, therefore 13.9 times the 17,061 average income.
Plymouth is 10th, behind Exeter, in ninth, where houses average 206,182, 10.9 times the 18,990 average income."
